The History of Mitsubishi Motors
From Model A to Modern Mobility
Mitsubishi’s automotive journey began in 1917 with the Mitsubishi Model A, Japan’s first series-production automobile. Hand-built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company, a predecessor to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Model A was a seven-seater sedan inspired by European designs. Though production ceased after only 22 units due to high costs, it marked Mitsubishi’s entry into the automotive world, setting the stage for a century of innovation.
In 1970, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was officially formed as the automotive division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries became independent. This move allowed Mitsubishi to focus on creating vehicles tailored to a rapidly modernizing world. The 1970s saw the launch of the Galant and Lancer, which became cornerstones of Mitsubishi’s lineup. The Galant, introduced in 1969, was praised for its sleek design and performance, while the Lancer, launched in 1973, became a favorite for its reliability and versatility.
The 1980s were a defining decade for Mitsubishi Motors, marked by the introduction of the Pajero in 1982. Named after a South American wildcat, the Pajero (known as Montero or Shogun in some markets) revolutionized the SUV market with its rugged design and off-road capabilities. Its debut as a concept at the 1979 Tokyo Motor Show generated buzz, and by 1983, a long-body variant expanded its appeal. The Pajero’s success in rally racing, including multiple Dakar Rally victories, cemented its reputation as a global icon.
Mitsubishi also pioneered four-wheel-drive technology for consumer vehicles, with the Pajero showcasing the company’s engineering prowess. By the late 1980s, models like the Starion, a turbocharged sports car, and the introduction of intercooled diesel turbo engines demonstrated Mitsubishi’s commitment to performance and innovation.
The 1990s brought challenges, including the 1997 East Asian financial crisis, which impacted Mitsubishi’s global operations. Despite this, the company expanded its presence in Europe through Netherlands Car B.V. (NedCar), becoming the first Japanese automaker to produce vehicles in the heart of Europe with the Carisma in 1995. However, a recall cover-up scandal in 2000, involving unreported vehicle defects, damaged Mitsubishi’s reputation in Japan and led to significant reforms.
In the 2000s, Mitsubishi Motors faced financial difficulties, exacerbated by a failed “0-0-0” finance offer in the U.S. that led to defaults and a $454 million provision in 2003. Sales plummeted, but new models like the Outlander (2001) and the redesigned Lancer (2007) helped stabilize the brand. The Outlander, in particular, became a bestseller, blending SUV practicality with modern design.
Today, Mitsubishi Motors is a leader in sustainable mobility, with vehicles like the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), launched in 2013, showcasing its commitment to eco-friendly innovation. As part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance since 2016, Mitsubishi continues to develop electric and hybrid vehicles, with a recent partnership with Nissan and Honda announced in 2024 to advance electric model development.
Iconic Mitsubishi Vehicles
Driving Adventure and Innovation
Mitsubishi Motors has produced some of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history, blending style, performance, and durability. Here are a few highlights:
Mitsubishi’s vehicles are designed for “spirited people looking for something different,” as noted by Mitsubishi Motors North America. From rally stages to city streets, these models embody the company’s ethos of adventure and innovation.
The Mitsubishi Group
A Legacy Beyond Automobiles
While Mitsubishi Motors is a flagship of the Mitsubishi brand, the broader Mitsubishi Group, or Mitsubishi Keiretsu, is a conglomerate of independent companies sharing the iconic three-diamond logo. Founded in 1870 by Yataro Iwasaki as a shipping firm, Mitsubishi diversified into mining, banking, and shipbuilding by the late 19th century. The name “Mitsubishi,” meaning “three diamonds,” reflects the rhombus-shaped logo inspired by Iwasaki’s family crest and the Tosa clan’s emblem.
After World War II, the Allied occupation dissolved Japan’s zaibatsu (large conglomerates), including Mitsubishi, to decentralize economic power. However, the group’s companies, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, continued to thrive independently while maintaining the Mitsubishi brand. These companies collaborate through the Mitsubishi Kin’yōkai, a monthly executive meeting, but operate autonomously.
Today, the Mitsubishi Group spans diverse sectors:
The Mitsubishi Group’s combined revenue accounts for approximately 7.7% of Japan’s publicly traded companies, with assets totaling 433 trillion yen as of 2020. Its legacy of innovation continues to shape industries worldwide.
Mitsubishi’s Future and Commitment
Driving Toward a Sustainable Tomorrow
Mitsubishi Motors is at the forefront of the automotive industry’s shift toward sustainability. The Outlander PHEV, one of the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUVs, exemplifies Mitsubishi’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while delivering performance. In 2024, Mitsubishi announced a partnership with Nissan and Honda to develop next-generation electric vehicles, positioning the company as a leader in the electric mobility revolution.
Beyond vehicles, Mitsubishi Motors prioritizes social responsibility. Since 1992, the company has operated an Automobile Information Service for Children in Japan, answering questions from students and teachers about the automotive industry—a unique initiative in the sector. Mitsubishi also supports global communities through charitable programs and sustainability efforts, aligning with the Mitsubishi Group’s broader mission to address societal challenges.
The Mitsubishi Group continues to innovate across its portfolio. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is developing hydrogen and ammonia value chains to support decarbonization, while Mitsubishi Electric advances technologies like weather radar systems, as seen in the 1964 Mt. Fuji installation. These efforts reflect Mitsubishi’s dedication to a “safe, secure, and comfortable world.”
As Mitsubishi Motors and the Mitsubishi Group look to the future, they remain guided by Yataro Iwasaki’s vision of adaptability and excellence. Whether through cutting-edge vehicles or global industrial solutions, Mitsubishi continues to drive ambition and shape the next era of innovation.
